Stand And Deliver: Your hobby or your life?
I don't know if those who are on my Facebook or those that arent (add me Gareth Mills, i'm posing with Optimus in my pic) but saw it in the press the story of a guy who's partner has told him he must sell up his TF collection or she'll leave him. Me personally I'd help her pack lol!!
But seeing as the boards are quiet I thought I'd start a nice new thread and ask you wonderful folks has your hobby gotten in the way of your life/lifestyle? Has family or peer pressure made you step away? See, the bright light... it ain't heaven, son. It's just a muzzle flare |

Re: Stand And Deliver: Your hobby or your life?
I was lucky that my girlfriend is a hoarder and a major wrestling geek, so she's OK with my comic and Transformer room.
We've got a 3 bedroom house with 1 spare room and enough space in the living room for an inflatable king size bed, so more than enough space for people to stay over if needed, so I get to keep my hobby room. She sometimes worries about how much I spend month to month, so I tend to remind her how much she spends on wine. At least I've got something to show for my spendings. 360 MiniCons and counting. My girlfriend doesnt mind (ok she wouldn't like the collection in the living room but I can live with that!)
As she says "its your money and you can buy whatever daft things you want" I'm seeing it as an investment (well thats what i keep telling myself!!) Wraithchild666 reborn I used to be normal like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.. |

Other way around my girlfriend has meant i've had to put all my interests on hold as she has no interest in them.
I get to go bits once a week or two weeks, but that's about it. Transformers Resource |

Re: Stand And Deliver: Your hobby or your life?
For me there is no significant other to get in the way of my hobby but I find that work is doing a good enough job of getting in the way itself.
In terms of "Hobby getting in the way of life" yes for sure. When I am not working I am working on one of the websites I maintain, am taking images or eating so I don't really get that much free time these days. Even my TV watching is down to half an hour of the news a day and I've played a video game twice since the the end of the year. What does this mean? It means my socialising has pretty much dried up again. I've tried making an effort more over the last few months, but I probably actually see any of my friends once every month or two months and normally its just for a film or at a gig. I'm going to try to get more of a work-life balance going again but its hard. Right now I work 6 days a week on average, have done some contract work and have just become a share-holder in a consultancy company for which I will also be an contractor and, in a month or so, I will probably become a director of another start-up. So as you can imagine that takes up most of my days. During the week when i get in I tend to eat then start working on my own projects which leaves one weekend day to relax and that, for the last 4 months, has involved more of my own work or perhaps resting. With the additional work / companies I have taken on it will probably get worse but hopefully it will prove worth it in the end as if my current employer does go under in 6-9 months as it has been predicted, hopefully the start-up and consultancy work would have built up enough that I can go full time on that. So at the moment Work Life is winning over hobby and personal life is restricted to about 3 hours a week. |

The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done. |
