Michael Bay has announced in
his forums that he won't be doing Transformers 2, in retaliation to Paramount Pictures's decision not to release Transformers on Blue-Ray!
Quote "
I want people to see my movies in the best formats possible. For them
to deny people who have Blu-ray sucks! They were progressive by having
two formats. No Transformers 2 for me!
Bay

Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks both announced today that they will be exclusively supporting HD DVD as their next generation DVD format. One of the first films to be released in the format will be Transformers. Below you will find the press release
"Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG each announced today that they will exclusively support the next-generation HD DVD format on a worldwide basis. The exclusive HD DVD commitment will include all movies distributed by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films, as well as movies from DreamWorks Animation, which are distributed exclusively by Paramount Home Entertainment.
The companies each said that the decision to distribute exclusively in the HD DVD format resulted from an extensive evaluation of current market offerings, which confirmed the clear benefits of HD DVD, particularly its market-ready technology and lower manufacturing costs. Paramount Home Entertainment will launch its exclusive HD DVD program with the release of the blockbuster comedy hit Blades of Glory on August 28th and follow with two of the biggest grossing movies of the year Transformers and Shrek the Third. These three titles alone represent more than $1.5 billion in box office ticket sales worldwide.
"The combination of Paramount and DreamWorks Animation brings a critical mass of current box office hits to consumers with a line-up of live action and animated films that are perfect for HD DVD," stated Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures, which is currently the leading studio in domestic box office. "Part of our vision is to aggressively extend our movies beyond the theater, and deliver the quality and features that appeal to our audience. I believe HD DVD is not only the affordable high quality choice for consumers, but also the smart choice for Paramount."
"We decided to release 'Shrek the Third' and other DreamWorks Animation titles exclusively on HD DVD because we believe it is the best format to bring high quality home entertainment to a key segment of our audience -- families," stated DreamWorks Animation CEO, Jeffrey Katzenberg. "We believe the combination of this year's low-priced HD DVD players and the commitment to release a significant number of hit titles in the fall makes HD DVD the best way to view movies at home."
The studios said, "With the rapid increase of HD TV screens in households, and audiences wanting to enjoy the total entertainment experience, HD DVD has emerged as the most affordable way for consumers to watch their movies in high definition. In addition to pristine quality, HD DVD also offers consumers the chance to personalize the movie-watching experience, to interact with their movies and even to connect with a community of other fans."
Paramount Home Entertainment will issue new releases day and date as well as catalog titles exclusively on HD DVD. Today's announcement does not include films directed by Steven Spielberg as his films are not exclusive to either format."

The Transformers Movie continues to pull in audiences across the US with estimated takings of a quarter of a million dollars a day over the weekend just gone. Transformers has now climbed to number 24 in the highest domestic earning films in the US (just behind Pirates of the Caribbean 3 by 1 million dollars, and 3 million behind Star Wars Return of the Jedi).
Although the takings differ you can see the listings as
Yahoo Movies and
BoxOfficeMojo
The film ranks at Number 34 on the All Time Highest Grossing Films Internationally on
The Numbers - although that site still shows Transformers at No 26 domestically.

If you'd thought the Transformers Movie was already big, then you ain't seen nothing yet. Nelson, admin of
Shoot for the Edit (Michael Bay's blog)' has let the world know that Transformers is heading for the Imax cinema's in the US. We can only hope that it makes it's way to Imax's in the UK, as I'd personally love to see it on the stupidly-big screen.
Coming Soon.net tease that the film will contain "more footage" and will start on September 21st

With reports of Transformers breaking the $600 million dollar mark, with a 50/50 split on domestic (US) and international, it's interesting to see how the film is doing a month on from it's US release (and 2 weeks in the UK).
The film remains at No.4 in the US box office according to BoxOfficeMojo (ahead of the Simpsons) and behind Harry Potter, Bourne Ultimatum and Rush Hour 3, but No.8 according to TimeOut.com). Whilst in the UK attendances dropped by over 50% a week after the films release (though the advent of two sunny weekends probably didn't help), although it is still reported as No.2 (above Harry Potter and below the Simpsons).
So the film is still doing well, with a $450 million profit (after production).

Variety Asia Online have a report on how the Transformers movie performed in Japan when it launched compare to other overseas competition this year.
From
http://www.varietyasiaonline.com/content/view/1822/1/
TOKYO -- Opening on Saturday (Aug 4) on 600 screens, the Michael
Bay-helmed "Transformers" jumped straight to the top of the Japanese
weekend B.O. with a two-day total of Y631.3 million ($5.35 million.)
That spelled more than "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix ,"
which took in $4.04 million over the weekend.
The "Transformers" figure is 16% better than the $4.6 million
opening weekend for "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black
Pearl" ( Japan cume: $57.5 million) and 6% better than the $5.07
million of "Mission Impossible III" (Japan cume $43.4 million), both of
which bowed in the same summer period.
"Transformers" also compares favorably with Bay's previous smash
"Armageddon," which opened in Japan with $5.87 million and went on to
make $114 million in 1998. With the Japanese exhibition circuit
considerably smaller than today, "Armageddon" had a lesser number of
prints.
Looking at the strong early numbers, and the higher than expected
female auds, distributor United International Pictures is predicting a
$59 million final tally for "Transformers."
