Generation 1 - Highbrow Unpainted Resin - Information
The toy featured in this Transformers toy gallery is an extremely rare Generation One resin hardcopy of the Autobot Headmaster Highbrow (made in 1986/7).
The toy is entirely unpainted and is incomplete, having only four of the 6 blades, no gun, rear wheel or head. This hardcopy of Highbrow is the earliest form used in the toymaking process (other than the original mold). Hardcopies are produced prior to prototypes and testshots, and are both extremley hard to find as well as delicate.
This is the only Generation One Hardcopy of Highbrow which we have seen, and is certainly the only one you will see on the inernet, or on display. The toy features various mold differences from the final released toy.

Generation 1 - Highbrow Unpainted Resin - Toy Review
The Highbrow figure features within this gallery, is a unpainted resin hardcopy and is an extremely early piece
in a toys production life-cycle. After the initial resin prototypes, 1st shots are usually created, followed by more general testshots, pre-production samples (in mock-up packaging),
packaged samples and then the final run of the toys are produced. Not all Generation One hardcopies are made from resin, other pieces were
produced from wood, though some of these are the original scuplts. We have noted over 20 differences between the Highbrow hardcopy
and the final release of the figure. To help highlight some of the differences, the gallery contains some comparions images as well as
photographs of the final figure. We appoligise for the state of the final toy, we bought him back in 1987, and so he has sufferd from
a fair amount of ware.
Here are difference that we have noticed so far.
- There are several minor mould differences on the cockpit, such as the frame and the clips on the plastic windshield
- On the righthand side of the front of the cockpit, the final toy has two small groves. These are missing on the resin hardcopy
- On the underside of the cockpit where Highbrow's gun can clip in, there are two small holes on the final toy that do not exist on the prototype.
- On the right wing on the final figure, the most inner intake is half filled. On the hardcopy , the intake is fully cut out. The left wing is the same on both toys.
- On the underside of the wing, the three "fins" are much smaller on the hardcopy than they are on the final version.
- Some of the screw holes are also missing the "lips" that are visable on the final toy.
- If you fold the wing tips down, there are two blocks on the final toy, this do not exist on the hardcopy
- On top of the toy, where the rotorblades clip to the toy, there are some slight moulding differences.
- Some of the more detailed markings on the tail and underside of the wings, appears to be missing on the prototype. Though they may just have been worn away over time.
- One of the more visable difference between the resin hardcopy and the final toy is the read wheel. On the prototype, the wheel is housed outside of the main leg. On the final release, the wheel was changed to be housed inside the figure, making it less likely to break.
- The pegs that are used to pull out the hands are much longer on the prototype. They were probably shrunk for safety reasons.
- The hands on the resin are missing the two small grooves on the thumb. However, the three "bars" on the outside of the hand are larger.
- On the final toy, the waist has what are best described as "three compartments". On the prototype, there is only one (the central one).
- The biggest difference between the resin hardcopy and the final release of the toy, is that on the prototype, the shoulders can slide up and down. We've tried to highlight this in a couple of pictures. We suspect that this feature was removed as the arms would probably become very loose, very quickly.
- On the upper part of the leg, the final toy has a rectangle marking on both sides of each leg. On the hardcopy, this marking is only on one side, indicating that this is the front of the leg.
- There are no copyright markings on the toy (it's still a hardcopy after all)
- The detailing on the outer part of the chest (the grills) are wider on the prototype
- There are not rating markings on the chest of the prototype, both on the outer part (the scale), and the inner techspec area
- The clip that joins the cockpit to the body (inserting into the headmaster slot), is a different shape. Its not as rounded as the final toy
