Collectors Edition Japanese - Silver Convoy (fake) - Information
We've owned this toy for some time now, yet have waited on creating a photogallery for it, as to be honest we were unsure if we wanted to show it off to the world.
If you attended Auto Assembly 2006 and visited the Transformers At The Moon / Lucky Draw Transformers display, you would have seen this figure. That was only the second time the toy had been removed from it's packaging, and this photoshoot is the first time it has been fully transformed.
The toy itself is a Chrome Silver Transformers Collectors Edition Convoy toy, from Takara. The figure is boxed in the Dreamwave packaging, and we picked it up from the previous owner after seeing a picture of the toy on Fred's Workshop (Variants, Lunchitme Special / Fakes page).
We were convinced that the toy was probably a custom figure, although a very nice one (and well done), although chromed Collectors Edition figures were mentioned in a Botcon rareities panel around the same time.
Before you judge the toy, here's a little background information that you need to bear in mind.
1) Chrome Transformers toy are known to exists - Lucky Draw Transformers, e-Hobby Exclusives, Pre-Transformers (Staff only items).
2) Staff only items, usually Takara, are known to be given out - Trucks with Transformers stickers on were the most recent (2007 Movie tie-ins). Green Lio Convoy's and Gold Hot Rodimus' are other rumoured examples. These toys (staff exclusive items) are almost impossible to confirm, unless a staff member, highup in Takara-Tomy, confirm them.
3) Toys have been produced for potential Magazine / Lucky Draw exclusives, then cancelled - Black Rodimus Convoy (as seen on the Ministry of Toys auctions)
4) Fake Transformers are produced regulary in the last few years, with chrome fake WSTF being very popular with the manufacturers.
5) Chrome Transformers were made by Takara for the Collectors Edition panel (see the TFCC report on Rarities)
We could simply sit here and say 'it's a Takara staff piece', but we have no proof. It could be, we just doubt this piece is. Our Chrome Starscream on the other hand appears more official, although it is still hard to tell. There are certain parts to this toy which make it's official nature to be put in question.
1) Feet - they are unchromed, the onlu unchromed parts of the toy. It is unknown why, even if the toy was faked, as to why these parts were missing.
2) Missile Spruce - The spruce where the missiles should clip on, they were broken off when we bought it, are unpainted and show the black plastic. We do not own the Collectors Edition toy, so we cannot tell you if this was black on the released version, although we would assume so.
3) Red parts - parts of the paint on the body, arm, has chipped off. You can see the red plastic beneath this. The problem is that Convoy would have been made from red plastic.
4) Axe - There is a buildup of silver paint at the bottom of the axe handle, looking like this has been repainted, or has not been applied in a single coat.
5) Box - The toy was not sealed whem we purchased it, we knew it would not be.
I can't remember who we bought the figure from, it was not one of the dealers we use for Lucky Draw and rare items, which would also put doubts in our head. Purhaps some of the experts may also be able to identify the mold of Convoy from the hands, as well as the number 4 on the back of his head. I can't see the letter / numbering on the trailer though.
Still, this is a pretty cool toy. We've put it in the Prototype section as it doesn't look like it's finished, by the feet, so it could be a prototype of a fake, or a one off. We've never seen another version of this toy, which is very odd for a fake - they are made to sell, and you'd usually see more than one of them made.

Collectors Edition Japanese - Silver Convoy (fake) - Toy Review
Although the origin of Silver Chrome Convoy is unknown, I feel there is no denying the fact that the toy is pretty cool. He goes really well with our Chrome Silver Starscream and other Lucky Draw items, such as Primus (often mistakenly referred to as God Primus, that's his function), and the two chrome e-Hobby toys Silver Streak and Gold Meister.
The toy comes with a silver (chrome) axe and roller (which is pretty cool). We own the original Optimus Prime toy (very battered due to the age and playware) along with a Black JAFCON Convoy, Pepsi Convoy and Clear Convoy testshot. We also own various Ultra Magnus toys (two regular, one plastic one rubber tyre, Shinning and Pre Movie), which takes our tally of this mold to four.
The Generation One Convoy, Optimus Prime, mode is the alpha mode for Transformers. The toy converts from a great truck and trailer form, with battle base and additional items (roller), to a nice looking, well proportioned robot, in the basic red and blue colour scheme (in this case all chrome silver). This version of the toy also comes with a gun (different from the original, not as nice) and a his axe.
The toy is exceptionally shinny, though has some scratching and fingerprints (which is really annoying). We've only removed it three times, and transformed the toy once (fully). The figure is stored seperately to the majority of our Transformers, with the Lucky Draw Items, but we hope to display it better in the future.
Eagle-eyed visitors to the site will have noticed the toy in two other galleries, Lucky Draw Collection (boxed) and Lucky Draw Auto Assembly display (in truck mode).
