Beast Wars II - Green Flash Lio Convoy - Information
Ths toy featured in this Transformers toy gallery is often referred to as Green Flash Lio Convoy.
The figure is exceptionally rare, with only a few samples being seen (we know of only 2), one owned by Tony Preto - who dubbed the toy Green Lio Convoy - and one own by ourselves.
The figure is an unreleased Beast Wars II figure, rumoured to be a Takara Staff Item (according to Tony Preto). Below you will find the facts on the toy and possibly origins of the figure.
The Green Warrior (Green Flash Lio Convoy) figure is based on the Green Warrior character which appeared in both Beast Wars II and Beast Wars Neo. This character in Beast Wars I was the combined essence of both Lio Convoy and Lio Junior. In Beast Wars Neo the Green Warrior was Lio Convoy, releasing the power of the Matrix.
So the correct name for this toy would be either Lio Convoy Green Warrior version or Green Warrior Lio Convoy (we have chosen the latter).
This figure was rumoured to be a Takara Staff item, and has also been described as an unreleased Lucky Draw figure. Having owned this piece, and held it in our hands, we can confirm with a high degree of certainty that this figure is a test shot. The question is what is the test shot for?
1) A testshot for Flash Lio Convoy
2) An unreleased Store Exclusive
3) A planned, and unused, Lucky Draw Item
4) A Staff Item
The first item is highly unlikey, due to the release date of Beast Wars II: The Movie compared to the airing date of Beast Wars II episode 43. The regular episode aired on 27th January 1999 whilst the Beast Wars II Movie was released on 19th Decemeber 1998. This would indicate that Takara would have based the Flash Lio Convoy figure on the appearance of Flash Lio Convoy in the Movie.
The second option, unreleased Store Exclusive, has high possibilities. During Beast Wars II there were a few store exclusive figures, Flash Lio Convoy, Black Lio Convoy, Burning Convoy to name a few. This figure is clearly based on the Green Warrior character that appeared in episode 43 of Beast Wars II and / or episode 29 of Beast Wars Neo. When the toy would have been designed, the last previously used version of the Lio Convoy mold would have been Flash Lio Convoy, and therefore the use of parts from that mold woudl make sence.
The figure or Green Warrior is also unpainted, it has no rub sign, and features no paint applications at all. This clearly shows that the toy is unfinished and is a testshot.
The third item is a possibility, however clear or green Lucky Draws were not used at this time. TV Magazine often has draw prizes in January, which was prior to the end of Beast Wars II, so it is unlikely that this figure would have been designed for a TV Magazine prize campaign.
The fourth explanation, a Staff Item, would be the hardest to prove, but as pointed out under the second option, this figure has no paint applications at all (eyes, claws, head, chest etc), therefore it is clearly an unfinished product.
Although we cannot be certain, we feel the most likey and logical explanation of the Green Warrior Lio Convoy (Green Flash Lio Convoy) figure is that it is simply a testshot for a planned Store Exclusive which was dropped (most likely due to Beast Wars Metals and Beast Wars Neo).
