This is the first Transformers Board Game ever made. It's full title is Transformers Adventure Game - Defeat the Decepticons, and it was released in 1984 by The Warren Company. We bought the game in the mid-late 80's (as we did not get our first Transformers toys until 1986), and have owned this ever since.
The objective of the game was to rescue the Minibots, represented by circular card pieces with images of the Minibots on them. The unique feature of this game was the method in which you moved. Rather than a basic board game movement, throw one or two dice and move X spaces, this game featured Hexagon spaces (for want of a better word). Each angle as a number from 1 to 6 and when you roll the dice you move in the direction the numbers take you. For example if you roll 4 and 6, you can move in direction 4 then direction 6 or direction 6 then direction 4. If you roll a double you move 1 hexagon in any direction.
This gave the game an edge, and meant it was harder to pick up the Minibots then you would think. There were also "draw card spaces", denoted by a Star Burst. If you landed on one of these spaces you had to draw a card. If you drew a Decepticon card you have to transform into Truck mode (each player took the form of a cardboard Optimus Prime figure, on different coloured backgrounds). If you rolled an Autobot then you could transform back. The only other way of transforming back was to pick up a Minibot. When in truck mode you could only move on one die.
The idea of the cards was a good one, although there was no insentive to land on the squares, so in most instances you could choose to avoid them.
