Survival - Steel - 11-26-2010 04:08 PM

Anyone here enjoy camping and outdoor survival?

I'm going through a phase of it right now. I was a scout and a cadet, plus my dad was in the forces so he used to try his best to make sure I'd have the ability to survive. I actualy think he maybe thought Mad Max was a documentery...

Anyway I'm reassessing my kit and upgrading it. The old army gear is solid for sure, but these days you can make things alot easier and more comfortable with the latest gear. I'm working on a Bugout Bag and slowly building up to a full survival kit (I have many basic ones but I'm talking about for most preparable situations and to last for extended periods of survival.

I always make sure we have plenty of back up food and water about the place and other things incase of blackouts, being snowed in or ZOMBIE APOCOLYPSE! Its not as comprehensive as I would like but then I'd like a bomb shelter, back up generators and probubly some hydroponics, but hey I'm crazy and clearly becoming Batman.

It's one of those things that I think we're really lacking in Britain at the mo. No culture amongst the young ones for 'self-preservation'.

I did look into starting my own scout organisation...

The 'Streaker Youth...

Indeed Streaky. I dont think there is nearly the same level of intrest in any sort of outdoorsy activity. I may be jaded but it seems to me that many people would be too busy trying to find an app too tell them how too survive on their i-phone.

Perhaps I should do something similar. My boys are too young at the moment but some of my mates have kids, cousins or nephews about the right sort of age for a Scouts type thing. Unfortunatly if I get involved it may end up looking more like a paramilitary training group. Still... I will lead them with an iron fist! Deserters will be shot on sight!!

I think you need an ethos to start from - I picked up a copy of Baden Powells 'Scouting for Boys' and started working from there.

hmmm... I dont think world domination is an ethos...

Of course it is!

...just not a very popular one for parents to push towards their kids...

Of course not. I wouldn't teach them about world domination. That way they'd get ideas of over throwing me instead of being my loyal minions.

It's gotta be all about respecting the natural order of things...

Instill a love of hierarchy!

Peace through tyranny!

i dont think a lot of ppl will care about survival skills as long as they can tell everyone they are single on faceboook.

This is the truth of today.

People will need survival skills more in the future when things get tough, its whether many of those skills have been lost by then at is the problem. But it would give the youth of today something to do and learn that is practical and thus might keep them out of trouble they would otherwise get into

Re: Survival - Sunstreaker - 11-28-2010 01:49 PM

My kids at school set up a Facebook page celebrating my indoctrinating teaching of them, they named the page after my primary teaching;

SUADWI.

Shut up and deal with it.

That's what the youth of today are lacking. The dynamism to get off their arses and actually confront life head on.

They would rather mope about at home, seeking justification for their lives from people they've never met on t'interweb, reading books about sparkling vampires, and listening to Evanescence...

YOUTH OF TODAY - YOU ARE THE MOVERS AND SHAKERS OF TOMORROW! SEIZE YOUR DAY!
